Mrs. Ratcliffe's Revolution (2007)

Talking about a British family who moved from England to East Germany in the late 60’s. A father, Frank Ratcliffe, an English teacher that has so much believe in communist. A mother, Dorothy, an extraordinary housewife who cares about the family and the freedom itself. Alex, a seventeen-year-old rebel daughter. An eleven-years-old communist girl, Mary, who feels happy being an informer. And Philip, an uncle, who likes to capture great moments with his camera.

Fulfiling father’s dream, they lived in this ‘beautiful’ country, with the ‘beautiful’ belief also. The father turned into an activist and so her little daughter. The older sister tried her best to lives her life with her own way. Read American newspapers and books. Listened to the American radio and records. How about the mother then? Being suppressive and quiet doesn’t mean that Mom didn’t have will to free at all. Being helped with the capitalist neighbour, Dorothy made a great revolution for her and her family. How? Find it by yourself, kid.

My favourite part is when they moved from Yorkshire to East Germany with their tiny little car and tons of bags on the top of it. Hand drawn, as usual. And the ending, of course.

This unusual dark comedy movie taught us to free yourself. Don't let you own idealism kills you from inside, because the strongest barrier comes from ourself. We’re the one who made thoughts and beliefs. Not him. Not her. Not them. Not somebody out there.

Enjoy!
